Heavy Rigid (HR) Truck Licence Training Wollongong
Get your HR truck licence with local, Transport for NSW compliant training at our Unanderra depot. Choose our rapid 1-Day Automatic program ($1,500) or step up to an Unrestricted Road Ranger Constant-Mesh qualification ($2,000) to maximize your commercial transport career.
Choose Your Gearbox Pathway: Auto vs. Unrestricted Road Ranger
-
1-Day Automatic/Synchromesh Package ($1,500): Run through an intensive single-day module (7:00 am to 4:00 pm, available Monday to Sunday) to legally operate modern fleet logistics trucks, city transit buses, and standard heavy rigid configurations.
-
2-Day Unrestricted Road Ranger Course ($2,000): Master the art of double-clutching and constant-mesh gearboxes (available Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:00 pm). This elite qualification leaves your licence completely unrestricted, opening the door to heavy civil construction tippers and mining-support fleets.
-
Integrated HVCBA Assessment: Both pathways bypass the stressful wait times of a standard Transport for NSW road test. Complete your training and final evaluation directly with our accredited assessors at our Unanderra base.

If your heavy vehicle licence has a condition “B” restriction, you’re limited to driving vehicles with automatic or synchromesh gearboxes.
Q: What is the difference between an Automatic and a Road Ranger HR truck licence in NSW?
A: Training in an automatic or synchromesh vehicle places a ‘B Condition’ restriction on your heavy vehicle licence, limiting you to those specific transmissions. Completing your HR training with AOTA in a non-synchromesh Road Ranger vehicle gives you an unrestricted qualification, certifying you to drive any heavy rigid vehicle setup across Australia.
Q: What are the exact prerequisites to apply for an HR licence upgrade?
A: You must have held a provisional or unrestricted Class C Australian car licence (excluding learner permits) for a minimum of 2 years. Before booking your practical block with AOTA, you will need to complete the Heavy Vehicle Driver Knowledge Test and an eyesight test at a Service NSW centre to obtain your HVCBA learner logbook.
Q: Do you offer corporate group bookings for construction or concrete fleet companies?
A: Yes. AOTA coordinates custom corporate team training packages. We can handle multiple drivers simultaneously at our Unanderra training pad or set up structured licensing paths to upskill your active workforce efficiently, minimising company downtime.
