If your heavy vehicle licence has a condition “B” restriction, you’re limited to driving vehicles with automatic or synchromesh gearboxes. This means you can’t drive vehicles equipped with a non-synchromesh gearbox (often called a crash box). To remove this condition, you’ll need training to learn how to operate a non-synchromesh gearbox.

We allocate 8 hours training and assessment for the condition b removal. However, it can take longer depending on student competency.

Cost: $1200

One-on-one practical training

    • In order to apply for this training, all candidates are required to hold a licence with a B condition for either

      • Heavy Rigid (HR) Licence, or
      • Heavy Combination (HC) Licence

Upon successful completion of this training, all candidates who pass the test will have the Condition B removed from their licence, and will be certified to hold an unrestricted heavy vehicle licence that can drive auto, synchromesh or constant mesh transmissions.

Students who are found competent will be provided with the appropriate forms from the trainer which will need to be presented to a Transport for NSW Centre. The course price does not include the cost for issuing a new drivers licence.

Training/assessment can be conducted at AOTA Training Facility – 275a Princess Highway, Unanderra NSW

Q: What does a "B Condition" restriction mean on an NSW truck licence?

A: A B Condition restriction signifies that your heavy vehicle training and assessment were conducted using an automatic or synchromesh gearbox. While this permits you to drive most modern fleet vehicles, you are legally restricted from operating heavy vehicles equipped with traditional non-synchromesh (constant-mesh or Roadranger) transmissions.

Q: Do I need to retake the heavy vehicle knowledge test to remove my B Condition restriction?

A: No. Because you already hold an active heavy vehicle qualification (such as an HR or HC licence), you are not required to complete another computer-based driver knowledge test at Service NSW. You can jump directly into practical gearbox training and HVCBA assessment with AOTA.

Q: Will removing the restriction from my HR licence automatically clear it for an HC classification?

A: Lifting a B Condition restriction upgrades your overall heavy vehicle transmission class to unrestricted. This means if you successfully complete the assessment in an HR constant-mesh vehicle, the automatic restriction is lifted for both your current rigid class and any matching articulated configurations you hold.
