Q: What is the exact operational difference between an LF and an LO licence class?

A: Class LF is the standard national heavy work qualification that legally permits you to operate traditional forklift trucks equipped with a mast and elevating load carriage (this covers standard warehouse counterbalance forks and reach trucks). Class LO is an entirely separate licence that strictly applies to an “Order Picker” machine, where the operator is elevated along with the cargo platform.

Q: Do I need to perform mathematical calculations during the forklift course?

A: Yes. Because managing heavy loads safely requires precise risk estimation, the SafeWork NSW evaluation includes a dedicated mathematical calculations component. You will be taught how to interpret load plates, verify safe working limits (SWL), and assess spatial weights. AOTA conducts a gentle Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) check on the first morning to ensure everyone receives the right level of instructional support.

Q: What identity and gear requirements must I meet on my practical training days?

A: Under strict SafeWork NSW regulations, you must be at least 18 years old and provide original, non-laminated identification to meet the 100-point identity metric on the morning of your training. Additionally, because you are inside a functioning machine area, you must wear compliant industrial PPE—specifically steel-capped safety boots, durable work trousers, and a high-visibility shirt or vest.
