Q: What type of truck can I drive with an NSW Medium Rigid (MR) licence?
A: An MR licence qualifies you to legally operate any rigid heavy vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) greater than 8 tonnes equipped with exactly two axles. This encompasses local freight delivery trucks, skip-bin tippers, concrete trucks, and standard town or school buses. You can also tow any trailer with a max GVM of 9 tonnes.
Q: How long does the MR licence training take with AOTA?
A: For operators who have successfully completed their Heavy Vehicle Driver Knowledge Test at Service NSW, our practical course can be completed in a single intensive day (7:00 am to 3:00 pm). We utilise highly efficient Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) criteria so you skip the long wait times of a standard RMS road test.
Q: What do I need to bring on my MR training day at Unanderra?
A: You must bring your current, valid NSW Class C driver’s licence, your official HVCBA learner logbook, and your Heavy Vehicle Competency Assessment book (both obtained from Service NSW after passing your knowledge test). Additionally, you are required to wear compliant steel-cap safety boots and a high-visibility shirt.
