Q: What types of vehicles can I legally drive with an NSW Light Rigid (LR) licence?
A: An LR licence allows you to legally operate rigid vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of up to 8 tonnes (carrying any towed trailer weighing no more than 9 tonnes GVM). This includes a wide array of commercial vehicles, delivery trucks, motorhomes, ambulance fleets, and passenger buses that seat more than 12 adults including the driver.
Q: Can I complete my LR truck licence training using my employer's vehicle?
A: Absolutely. AOTA specialises in corporate group bookings and fleet training. If your organization has registered, roadworthy, and class-compliant LR vehicles available, our accredited assessors can conduct the training and Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) directly at your workplace or at our Unanderra hub.
Do I need to hold an eco or manual car licence before upgrading to a Light Rigid licence?
A: To be eligible for an LR licence upgrade, you must have held a provisional or unrestricted Class C Australian car licence (excluding learner permits) for a minimum of 12 months. The transmission classification of your current car licence does not restrict your eligibility, but the gear structure of the vehicle used during your heavy vehicle assessment will determine if a gearbox condition is applied.
